The First OMEGA in Space: A Vintage Revival

OMEGA Recreates the CK 2998 with Modern Features

Omega has reintroduced one of its most iconic and sought-after timepieces, the CK 2998, with a modern twist. Known as “The First OMEGA in Space,” this watch pays homage to the brand’s deep-rooted connection to space exploration.

Originally released in 1959, the CK 2998 represented the second generation of the Speedmaster family. Its distinctive features, including slender Alpha hands, symmetrical case, and dark bezel, caught the attention of NASA astronaut Walter “Wally” Schirra. He chose the CK 2998 as his personal watch and wore it during the Sigma 7 mission of the Mercury program in 1962. This historic moment solidified the CK 2998’s legacy as a symbol of space exploration.

The updated CK 2998 models faithfully replicate the original design while incorporating modern elements. The 39.70 mm case maintains the symmetrical shape and polished-brushed stainless steel finish. The dark bezel ring, featuring the Speedmaster’s tachymeter scale, is made of black aluminum.

Beneath the hesalite-like form sapphire crystal, a CVD-coated dial in a grey-blue color reminiscent of the 1960s CK 2998 watches is showcased. Hour markers, hour/minute Alpha hands filled with vintage Super-LumiNova, and a central seconds “Baton” hand in white varnish complement the dial’s design.

Omega has preserved the watch’s historical significance with vintage OMEGA logos on the dial and crown. The caseback features a Seahorse medallion and engravings commemorating the “SPEEDMASTER,” “THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE,” and “OCTOBER 3, 1962.”

While the design remains true to its roots, the CK 2998 has received a significant technological upgrade. It is powered by a Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861, the latest evolution of the Calibre 321 that powered the original models. This movement offers exceptional precision, performance, and magnetic resistance.

Customers can choose from three different models. “The First OMEGA in Space” is available on a black or brown leather strap with a buckle or a full metal bracelet with “flat links” and Omega’s patented comfort release adjustment system. Each watch is presented in a special presentation box with an exclusive “Legendary Moonwatch” leaflet.

The reintroduction of the CK 2998 marks a celebration of Omega’s rich history and commitment to innovation. This iconic timepiece, now equipped with modern features, continues to inspire watch enthusiasts and space exploration enthusiasts around the world.
